Well, we have been experiencing “October’s bright blue weather” these last few days. On October 4, Nancy and I went to the TRAM Art Fair in Travelers Rest. This is a great show, if you are not familiar with it. There is a lot of folk art and outsider art, as well as a number of artists who are more conventional. We had an opportunity to see the work of a number of different artists whose work we might like to feature in the store. We also had an opportunity to talk to a lot of people who all seemed to want to know the same thing—”When are you going to get opened?” We told them all the same thing—”We are going to be in a tent in our parking lot for the Harvest Festival on October 18. Come to see us then!” So, while we won’t be on the Festival grounds proper, we will be at the end of the Swamp Rabbit Trail for those who participate in the Stroll. We will have some water, soft drinks, popcorn and other goodies to munch on, as well as some fun things to decorate your house for Halloween and Thanksgiving.
Work is really moving along on the building. The deck of the screen porch went up in just a couple of days and the rest of the deck work is being done. The sheetrock is being mudded and prepped for painting. New doors are on the way and new windows have been installed. We even noticed that the Trail has been scraped and rolled; we hope that means paving is not far behind.
Make the North Greenville Harvest Festival part of your plans for October 18. It should be a great day. Here’s a link to the Travelers Rest calendar for more info: http://travelersrestsc.com/life/calendar.php
Here’s another little slideshow of new construction developments. Enjoy!

It was so much fun to hear us and Lynn Duncan on Walter Edgar’s Journal the other day. For folks who asked if they could hear it, here it is in two parts! Thanks again to Dr. Edgar and Alfred Turner for a nice visit on the radio. Sounds like we’ll have a special sandwich recipe to add to the menu! To listen to the program, go to Walter Edgar’s Journal.

Well, here we are in the early stages of football season and I am happy to report that Furman is looking pretty good, so far. I haven’t had the chance to go to so many football games in years! I still have not made an opportunity to go to a Travelers Rest High game, but I was thinking the other day about when I was in high school–we would have these crisp fall nights in September (remember how we used to wear coats to those night games? Tell me global warming is not a reality!) and we could see the full moon rising over Paris Mountain from where we sat in the home stands at the school. I’m not sure how they did it, but it seemed to me that there was a full moon for every home game. Travelers Rest is showing a lot of improvement this season and I hope to get to a game. Maybe I’ll wait ‘til the October full moon, the Hunter’s moon.On the Furman campus the weekend of 9/20, we had a great time. Furman beat Delaware in a very exciting game, 23-21. Since Paladin Stadium was built on campus (first game was Sept. 19, 1981) there has been a wonderful atmosphere around the stadium prior to each home game. Granted, it is not quite the art form as at some schools, but tailgating has become a real “thing” for Paladin fans. My sophomore year roommate, Jenna, has been a part of a tailgate since 1981 and I have dropped in on that group as much as possible over the years. They always have great food and great discussions about almost anything. Sometimes, other old friends drop by, as they did this weekend when Betsy King and Cindy Ferro, 2 members of Furman’s AIAW 1976 National Championship Woman’s Golf team came over to say hello. This team included Betsy, Cindy, Beth Daniel, Sherry Turner, Leigh Coulter and Holly Hunt. Their victory was sealed when Beth Daniel sank a 3 foot putt on the final hole to win by I stroke over Nancy Lopez and the University of Tulsa.

(clockwise)Lynn Duncan, Joyce, Dr. Walter Edgar, Nancy
Wow! Nancy and I had the very special honor of being interviewed by Dr. Walter Edgar recently for his SC ETV-Radio program, Walter Edgar’s Journal. We were thrilled, to say the least. Nancy and I, along with Lynn Duncan, piled into the car on Wednesday (9/10) and headed to Columbia. Lynn is an Instructional Coach at Northwest Middle School, but in previous years, he was the advisor for the publication known as Echoes. Echoes was begun in 1984 by my TRHS (Class of ’70) classmate, Walt Cottingham and was shepherded for several years by Lynn after Walt moved to North Carolina. The idea of the publication is similar to that of the Foxfire series from Rabun County, GA, in that students went out into the community and interviewed residents about some of the “old ways”, like plowing with a mule. Lynn is presently working to preserve the 20 volumes of the publication on CD and make them available again.
We met Dr. Edgar at the ETV studios near Williams-Brice Stadium and proceeded to have a very pleasant conversation with him; it just happened that it was all being taped for later broadcast. We were able to talk about our Café and what it was that brought us back to Travelers Rest, our interest in the community and our desire to foster an awareness of the history of the area. Lynn talked about Echoes and Dr. Edgar talked about food. We did manage to get in a word about the Harvest Festival/TR200 celebration coming up in Travelers Rest on October 18 and the Swamp Rabbit Stroll on the Trail from 8-11am. Check out www.gcrd.org for information about the Stroll. I will try to keep some current information about it here, as well. Be sure to listen for us on Friday, October 3 at 12 noon on Walter Edgar’s Journal. Our local public radio station is at 90.1 FM.

Chris decided to leave the classroom and join us at the café because he enjoys the restaurant business. He says “I believe this is a great opportunity to have a job I will enjoy waking up for in the morning.” He has worked at both Stax’s Original at Cherrydale and at Sullivan’s on Sullivan’s Island, while he was in Charleston. At the Café, Chris will be in charge of the café portion of the business and will work closely with the chef to create wonderful lunches, tasty afternoon snacks and suppers-to-go.Chris shares our vision that The Café @ Williams Hardware will be a one of a kind place, encompassing the characteristics and styles of South Carolina. It’ll be a gathering spot for people to sit and eat, talk and have fun. The menu will be unlike any other in Travelers Rest and we will use as many local products as possible. Lunch will include soups, sandwiches, and salads. You may find a turkey sandwich with dressing and cranberry relish, sausage and rice soup, or maybe even what has become one of Nancy’s favorite things—a BBQ salad. For that tasty afternoon snack, we’ll offer cookies and milk, tea and scones, and cornbread and milk. You would be surprised at the reaction we get to the cornbread and milk idea! Overwhelming! Suppers-to-go will be a great way to provide your family with a good meal without the time and trouble of cooking it, whether it’s BBQ chicken, grilled salmon or lasagna.
Chris says “You’ll love gathering around the pot-bellied stove or out on the screened porch to visit with your friends and family over a great meal. Come to see us—there’s nothing else like it in Travelers Rest.”
